If you put your finger behind one pelvic fin on an ec you can see your fingerprint through the fin, whereas the mc have translucent pelvics, becoming almost opaque as they age, and can't be 'fingerprinted'.
It also has very different mottling from the mc, more like the spotting effect of tc. The very few mc me and my mate have taken in this same area were very green, and didn't have this yellow colour. As soon as i saw it in the water i knew immediately that it wasn't a murray, though it felt like one on the line.
    I've been wrong before though.

sorry, meant your possible EC was more likely to be a TC. Either way, nice fish to catch

So is there a defining characteristic of TCs?

I ask because the eye stripe is mentioned, yet...

    Obviously an MC.

Spots are another identifier, but this one has spots up front.

And overhanging jaw is the other, but this clearly has a concave forehead.

And a half decent TC (~70cm), sorry about the bad photo.

Hey Steve, funny you should say that because me and my mate both thought that it had the tc markings, but no distinct eye stripe. There are some dark markings across the eye, but sort of spotted apart and not making that nice clean stripe that is typical of them.

That's interesting Steve, because blokes a few posts back were wondering if there might be some sort of cross species happening. That looks like a tc you have there, but as you say the dent is also there with markings on the forehead. But it has the tc jaw. I wonder if the eggs are fertilised after they are laid, and a murray cod decides to mark em as it's territory? That would probably kill the eggs if they are a different species, or maybe fertilise them if they are close enough, i don't know. The fish you're holding has a good pic there of the dorsal fin, and the two fins, front and rear top, are joined together faily high up the fin, like a tc. Whereas the murray and the eastern have the forward dorsal taper back almost down to the skin before it meets the rear dorsal.
It mades me wonder what those cod are up to down in those dark waters lol!

Also mate, when you look at the difference between the skin markings of the mc and the tc you have there, the marks on mine are definately the zig zag dots like a tc. That's great but at the same time bugger! I think i'm gonna have to unscratch ec's from the caught-it list!!hahaha
Thanks for you info and example there mate, makes everything a bit clearer.

just the excuse you need to head up north and find an EC on the end of the line

Might have to wait a bit for the rivers to go down a bit though...

Been thinking about the hybrid possibility further and wondered if that because there are now numbers (if not large) of TCs getting around at breeding age thanks to stockings in the past they are taking up with MCs because there isn't enough TCs to go around, or something like you say. Be interesting to know if they are hybrids, whether they are sterile like a lot of cross species (mule, tigon etc.) or whether the dominant species genes will take over and the progeny of the hybrids will slowly return to the dominant characteristics or indeed if some or all of these possible hybrids are the offspring of hybrids and are returning to type. Hopefully this year will be another great year for recruitment!!!!

    Whatever, they're fun to catch!
