Default prefered tackle for bream flathead and whiting

i occasionally fish for bream flathead and whiting with bait anywhere between tweed and brisbane. although now i am thinking of targeting them with lures. so im after everyones suggestions on what plastics/hardbodies to use. also what lb line for main line and leader. i will also probably have to buy a suitable threadline reel and rod (if anyone knows of any decent combos i could pick up from bcf would be great). and if your from around that area or have fished that area any spots you could suggest would be great. also any techniques would be helpful. thanks.

    ok i'll bite...

First lets start with your rod, now for bream flathead and whiting your wanting a 6-12lb softplastics rod with a spin reel (whatever you can afford), check out the cheaper shimano plastic rods or the starlo stick which is quite a good rod.
Your rod needs to have a light tip, if your after bream and whiting and a spare spool comes in handy because you can change from 4lb or 6 lb spool to 8lb or 10 lb.

So for bream you want light braid and a 6 lb leader (you can go lighter still), same with whiting.
Flathead are pretty much the same but you beef up the leader a bit (10lb or 15lb) and probably never use less than 6 lb braid (but you can if you like) 8lb braid is good as flathead are not so fussy.

As for lures I can only post the ones I have had sucess with:

    Flathead
    ecogear sx40, sx48, sx60 (sx60 a good size for large flatty)
Rapala Xrap minows (good for large flatty)
    Viking crank minow
    Atomic shad
    TT swithblades 1/8
Attack lures (very good and cheap)
    Berkely frenzy
just about any minow lure you can buy (as pictured in my avatar a flathead will take most of those lures easily)...

    Bream
    Jackal chubby (renowned bream lure)
    kangoku shad
atomic hardz shad (new suspending range fromjapan)
    viking crank minow
    mini mullet -lively lures
sx40 (tried and true all rounder, good for bream and flatty)
TT swithblades 1/8 (bream lure used in and around structure)

    Whiting
Never caught one on HB lures except for plastics
    small minow plastics.
I do not really get many whiting around here.

As far as soft plastics goes that is another kettle of fish all together.

But for a resonable price check out Berkely, Rapala and Atomic Hardz (new range), some nice lures being made by them now at a reasonable price.

For a pricier selection but some very nice lures look to ecogear and japanese imports for bream.

Also remember many a good fish has been caught on a bargin bin special lure.

Mate it barely scratches the surface, but if your keen on lures get yourself a couple like these and start flickin them around structure, off the edge of grass beds and such, see how you go, what works for you and your style...

yes I live in Brisbane, and these lures are very effective at the right place and time on the Goldie (Tweed)and the Brisbane River and surrounding areas. Also remember when you get confident there is surface lures as well to be considered, but I am not good at them though others get some great results.

sure can, I do not have any honey holes, as you can imagine the Brisbane river is well thrashed, but I can recommend a few areas if you like.
Mate the access to the river is very limited, so if you got a boat then you can really start exploring, bu sure pm me and ill do my best.

i have 2 rods 1st one is a tica crisp X with a pinnical reel i think it is, i cant remember the braid thats on it its 6 or 4lb with 6lb leader.

2nd one is a berkley dropshot with a diawa sol 2500 6lb braid with 6lb leader on the 2nd spool i have 8lb braid with 10lb leader but thats for jewies.

i use poppers and plastics mainly for the bream usualy pumkinseed turtle backs or 2'' grubs poppers are river 2 sea / strike pro ever color ive tried works as long as it has the hairy tails on them.

flatties i use larger plastics 4 - 6'' i like the darker colours for them.
