Making Hard Body Lures
Hi everyone
Now that the colder months are upon us I was looking at some new hobbies to keep me busy and out of the house on those rainy days.
I was looking at making my own hard body lures and wanted some advice from you guys on how to do it. If you know any websites that would be great too.

Hi Brad,
I have been making my own lures for over thirty years. Every trip that needs serious cannon fodder I used to make them instead of buying. It is no real problem to make lures. The best advice I Can offer is to start with a lure that you know works. Study the shape and the bib angle ,these are the aqua-dynamics that make it work. Your lures don't have to be the same as long as they follow the same principles.
The most important consideration is the wood. I have a section of beech tree that has been laying on the forest floor for over eighty years. Beech is without doubt the best timber for lures . It is light ,strong.fine grained and has no flaws (like knots). It is easy to shape,I use a belt sander, just remember to use a face mask as it irritates your nose. .For eyelets I use heavy soft stainless, twisted with an allen key in a slow speed drill. They are then screwed into the lure with 24 hr araldite. Enamel is fine for colors. Treat your lure body first with a coat of penetrol and add a little to any paint ,it sticks like s''t to a blanket. Then finish with liquid glass (bunnings has it). I use light stainless as bibs . I cut ,shape and polish then glue with 24 hr araldite. I like metal bibs because it allows the lure to be tuned and stainless adds a bit of flash. Good luck Fiik.
