Default Shimano Stradic 6000 vs daiwa saltist 4500

What are everybodies thoughts on these spinning reels for fishing at swains reef for casting poppers, bottom bashing etc.I was leaning towards the Stradic because of the spare spool, but the saltist apparently has the same guts as the saltiga.I dunno

    Hi Mark
We fished Swains and Samaurez in Oct. last year.It was a trip of a lifetime.
I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions on this topic.
For bottom bashing you really want a short overhead setup ,you can tuck under your arm when fishing over the rails of the mother ship, otherwise you will wear yourself out bringing up heavy snapper leads in the first few days.
For chucking poppers from the dorries the Saltist would be good but a lot of guys had Penns in the "Spinfisher" or "Slammer" range. They hold a lot of braid in 80lb class and are basically indestructible. The Saltist 5000 is PE5 rated(first pic middle)and Saltist overhead 30 (last pic)would be my first choices.Think of comfort otherwise you will burn out quickly in the hot conditions!Click on the pics to enlarge.
Good luck and let us know how ya went!
    Cheers

    Hi Mark
I took a range of halco rooster poppers, laser pros, wobblers etc and storm pre rigged large shads.(halographic type in pink and green)The boat should have trolling gear when on the move, but I took some large skirts and rapala lures as well.
The guys we went with had everything including big bird like teasers.
The current is strong out there and is usually choppy after 10 am.One of the most effective methods we found in the dorrie was to troll the edges of the reef close up and find a nice drop off where the current is feeding into.Use a pillie lightly weighted and feed it down with the current into the reef.
Haven't taken any pics of the lures yet cause i left them up the coast.
Any big lure will do as the fish are agressive..
For popping go to GTPopping.com - GT, GT Popping, GT Fishing, Popper Casting, Popping, Poppers, Stickbaits, Giant Trevally, Chugging, Ulua, Plugging, Coral Sea, New Caledonia, Komodo, Cosmoledo, Tokara, Carpenter This will give you some ideas on Popping for Gts.
Oh yeah and man are you gonna get tangles mono to braid fishing the mother ship rails.I took a large spool of 80lb mono,50lb and 80lb braid,.
When you get to Gladstone you can head out in the shuttle via the dock to BigW and Tackle World to buy straw hat, sunscreen, hand towels, lead and anything else youv'e forgotten.
Got to watch the weight of your baggage big time.We all took 100mm pvc rod tubes that would hold four rods and stuff your reels inside your clothes luggage.Keep your clothes simple and take detergent so you can rinse and wash them each day in a bucket.Plaster yourself in sunscreen!!!
Refine your tackle to cover all bases.
    Here's a little Gt!
    Best of luck!
