Yep...coming up to that time of the year when I start a thread about cod season opening in Vic and how I am going to tackle it! Then I have a slack attack and do nothing when the time comes! This year, and for this post, I am going to be a bit more realistic!

The local channel where I fish produce cod...especially when using bait. Therefore of late I have not been bait fishing in there. Some short lure sessions chasing yellas have produced no fish. As I have not disturbed the cod in closed season, I am sort of happy.

When cod season opens, all I am going to do is resume bait fishing in the channels and upsize lures as well. Not too large a lure though as I still want to get a yella on a lure. I want to have a go getting a cod off the surface as well. this will be done in the local river or the creek. That is all!
    cheers

It has been a long time since I ate a cod but I didn't think they were too bad. Why bother chasing them? Good question, first of all, I like fishing. Secondly, I release the majority of fish I catch so taste doesn't matter...I even target carp at times! A third reason for me to target them is the fact that the closest waterway that I regularly fish contains more cod than anything else!

All people fish for relaxation...some people appreciate the extra bonus of getting a feed. Whatever floats your boat! If I were to go out chasing a feed, redfin it would be. If I did want a feed, well let's face it, in my case with the way I go at times...I may starve!

I think my "home cooked meals" remark may have been taken as though you were going to eat them rather than get parmy's & 3 veg delivered bender:)
Like yella's the taste can depend a bit on the size of the fish and the water it comes out of.
I normally end up taking one or two every year in my boat for a feed, generally that messed up by inhaling a lure we cant get out without killing it, cutting off a 6" lure with 2 sets of trebles still stuck down its throat and bleeding from the gills is not gonna work.It might swim away but to what type of death.I prefer to show the fish some respect and make a call.

There is only one native i want to hunt down for a feed/revenge.The trout cod.I don't care what it tastes like, i just wanna eat one of the bait stealing bastards.2 unsuccessful trips to lake sambell and we didn't even catch one:mad:

No misunderstanding...I knew what you meant.:) Murray cod are are the only fish I feel I have to release. Everything else, to be honest, the main reason I release rather than eat is out of laziness as in I can't be bothered cleaning the fish. No big deal except for times at Strathbogie when I release reasonable size redfin which should not be released due to the presence of maccas and bait thieving Trout cod in the area.

Have caught Cod in the off season as a by catch that have swallowed the lure & had to release them with the lure still in their gut & have always thought what a wast of a fish. The poor thing is probably going to die from not being able to eat. Trying to remove the lure will probably kill it anyway. I think in those circumstances you should be able to take the fish leaving the lure in it`s gut to show a Fishing Inspector if they show up.

As the law stands you have to release them if they are undersize or in the off season. I don`t keep Cod but in those circumstances releasing a fish that is going to die anyway is just a waste.

OK...I know what you mean now...creekboy may have thought you were suggesting to eat them!

You are no doubt correct. Problem with being able to justify an out of season or undersize cod with a lure down it's gob is that any idiot who wants to do the wrong thing can then just shove a lure down the throat of any fish they catch. That is my take on it.

I think we have all been in that spot ditch. All you can do is try and get it back in while doing the least damage to it.Your right bender idiots would ruin that one (they do it now for media pic's of the lure) but for a different rea$on.

Just having a look at the forecast for friday. 70% chance of 10-20mm rain in these part's.
Sort of gonna make having to work friday a bit more bearable at least for me.
Top of 23 on sat so will be interesting to see how it all pan's out.Type of weather that can shut them down after a warm spell.I'd be hitting the water at 12.01am fri if i was on the river and the rain hadn't come through yet.

actually with the crew i fish with we'd be still sitting round drinking cans at 12.01&1.01&2.01:confused:

I have no doubt you know what you are talking about in regards to cod behaviours AWOL! I thought then that it may be better getting to the channel an hour or two before daylight. Then a few things dawned on me. First, I would have to get up early! Secondly, I am not even sure if I have Friday off at this time. Plan was if I had to work I would be fishing with a couple hours of daylight then we'll into the night. Reality is day off or not this is what would have happened. Guessing if by chance the storms and rain roll in after I am fishing then this time should be good?

I am just going to take my chances and head out Friday arvo if it is not storming! A ten minute drive and ten minutes to pack up if disaster approaches so I don't think it is a big deal. My sister (read meals on wheels) will likely come out Friday evening as well! On saying that she has endured some fishing related stress of late...whilst at my house last week alone she introduced herself to my recently purchased Savage Gear Bat surface lure! Apparently it looks realistic! Just like the time my surface popper frog scared the crap out of her!

Am likely heading out Sunday arvo after work as well and if I can get Tuesday off...me thinks Monday will be brilliant late arvo/evening/Tuesday morning. Not necessarily chasing cod on all these trips but just wanting to get out there.

    Cheers

With the new revised forecast rain starting friday i dont think i will be going to far at all.
Not worth the hassle of getting stuck or worse, and as flat as it is up in my fishing parts, the water won't be going anywhere in a hurry either. This has the potential to have an affect on fishing and access for quite a few weeks.

Couple of messages i got so far from the boys going up thurs arvo seem to suggest that if i go up friday after work i will be all on my lonesome:( One of them even used the lame excuse of having to get his irrigation pumps away from the creek thursday, WTF,i thought pumps were supposed to be near the watero_OCould do mathoura, but being on the roads or river in this sort of stuff doesn't seem that smart now we are all older:D
Hope it doesn't spoil the cod classic to much for everyone up there,a lot of guys fish the 12k downstream of the lake.
On the plus side,if i stay at home it could give me the opportunity to catch my first cod trolling my street, or on a surface lure from my front doorstep on opening weekend:eek:

Looks like I may have Friday and Saturday off due to the rain. If by chance there is a break in the weather Friday evening I may get out to the channel. My Sunday session with 'Daggers DBK' was cancelled by myself as I will be committed to working all day. Tuesday evening may be my first serious run. A local channel if I am working on the day or if I can get the day off I may do a run to the creek where I fish. Or the creek may come to me!

I would think if any fishing does take place bait may be the go but on saying that, the channels will hold their clarity as they will be shut down if we get a decent rain.

As it is, the 6 yabbies I have have been stood down from DEFCON1 and are now relaxing. Time will tell!
    Cheers
