Pete, I have caught the odd carp on cold winter nights....but on bait. Do you think the conditions you like are more suited to insect activity and therefore suits your fly fishing better? I agree with your preference for a high barometric pressure.

Also, I wonder if CC's preference for warmer weather is related to his comfort levels?!!!!! On saying that, it may be difficult but if there is somewhere you fish that you can gather up some wood and start a fire, it is magic sitting there alongside the waterway....who needs a fish!!!!
    Cheers

Mate the warmer days will lift the water temp, and also lift fish activity. We have noticed at this time of year on lakes at high elevations the carp are feeding on the side with the warmer water temps,
    cheers Pete

It was a relatively good day today, so didn't want to waste it on watching TV and/or reading books, or other sedentary activities, such as surfing the interwebs, so I decided to make the most of it and go fishing! I wanted to go somewhere new, so I decided to ride my bike to Box Hill and catch the train eastward to the very last stop in Lilydale, home to the eponymous lake. I've heard the fish in Lilydale can be notoriously finicky, but was hoping that wouldn't apply to Carp too much.

Unfortunately, the trouble with deciding to go fishing mid-afternoon, is by the time I organised my gear and actually got out there, there wasn't too much daylight left - about an hour or so - enough time if they were on the bite, but unfortunately they weren't. Another contributing factor to my lack of success was my stale bread - I hadn't used it since last time I went fishing, and had trouble keeping it on the hook.

Nevertheless, despite my lack of fish, it's a good body of water and I am very keen to try it in the warmer months. The Carp would 'go off' there I reckon, especially after a few trips when I invariably suss out a good spot. Being very close to the train station and centre of town, it is also ideal for the suburban angler on a day trip - I can just stock up on bait and supplies when I get there!

There is a Carp (or two) somewhere in this lake with my name on it!

Do you check in on the forums when you stop fishing over winter? If so, you will be motivated to go when you see my posts!

I'm trying to hang on as long as I can, but truth is, I'll probably be off the airwaves in June-July-August. When it gets dark at 5-6pm and the fish aren't biting, I find it's not really worth my while.

By the way - I have successfully caught Carp in winter - one of my best hauls was right in the middle of winter. I got 20-30 odd from memory. What was interesting about that episode was that all my my usual haunts were dead quiet, which forced me to look for other spots. I came across one spot where the Carp went nuts. Me and a mate must have pulled hundreds of Carp out of the one tiny spot all over winter.

I also used to go camping/fishing along the Wimmera River during winter school holidays. We'd never get anything during the day, but left our rods in overnight. There would always be a massive Carp on them in the morning. Some of them were huge, well over 70cm, but this was before smartphones were a thing and bragmats were in vogue, so I've got no way to prove it.

At this point I am trying to stay motivated though. Maybe Trout in Karkarook could be an option? If you're catching stuff though, that will definitely motivate/inspire me....

You don't have to prove anything CC. I would say quite a few members would have liked to have a camera with them when they landed that big one.

Headed out to an ornamental pond in Ringwood the other day (Tuesday). The weather wasn't too bad, but the fish weren't on the bite. I didn't even lose my bait - and I was using bread! I'm not sure if there was actually fish in there - it looked quite shallow, and may have recently been dry, but that's the whole idea of trying a new spot, isn't it? You might get lucky, you might not. A rudimentary search on the internets suggested that there may be Carp in there...

I've got a couple of spots I want to check out over the cooler months, but the lack of fish is draining my enthusiasm!

It's not the cold weather I despise so much, it's the doughnuts!

    Waiting to be inspired!

When do you resume hostilities CC...Septemberish I guess? I remember telling you that you should try in the winter as I have done ok before. Not this year! Although I never tried the creek. Only one attempt in carp infested water on a good day for it and I failed dismally.
    Cheers

I have been going down the creek a fair bit lately - to collect golf balls! I even chucked a line in a month (or two) ago on an unusually warm winters day, but as the carp's custom during winter, they were nowhere to be seen.

I have no idea where they go in winter - the water is only knee-high to waist deep in places - but they are NOWHERE to be seen in winter, but then when it warms up, they suddenly appear in their HUNDREDS and THOUSANDS. Maybe there is a creek under the creek where they go in winter?

I have famously vowed not to fish in winter, and have largely kept my promise. Trouble is I have virtually no other hobbies besides fishing, so have been hoping on my bike to scout out potential new spots and on the internets stocking up on supplies (floats and hooks) for the upcoming carp season.

As for exactly when the carp season begins depends on when the carp rear their ugly heads. Last year I think I caught my first one in October...

Hi CC. In Winter you will find water warms and cools much slower than air so it won’t be a lot. It takes a few days of sun to warm the water up, and that usually comes with colder nights which will chill it back down again.
Wind has a bigger warming effect as it mixes the water and that’s why you generally find carp on the surface in shallow, out-of-the-wind areas in winter,
I agree with you they are harder to find very few Carp are caught on either lake Eildon or Nillhacootie in Winter. As you say when it warms up they are every where. Keep up the good work my freind
    Cheers Wally

a man needs a hobby theres nothing better than fishing I reckon, funny I have done well flyfishing for carp in winter probably depends on location, I suggest try for trout in winter if u have any trout water on your area that's not closed for the season such as a lake.

Your Lilydale lake has Trout and Redfin in it also stocked up for the June July School holidays with Rainbow Trout. As the closed season started a couple of weeks in June I would say it is OK to fish for Trout. But as always a new area or a different species check the rules and regulations out yourself.

Reminds me of a quotation from the ageless book, The Compleat Angler by Izaax Walton, written back in 1653.
As best I can remember it.

    ON THE FOURTYH DAY,
    PISCATOR THE MASTER SAID TO VENATOR HIS SCHOLAR;
    "WE MAY SAY OF ANGLING
AS DOCTOR BOTELLIER SAID OF STRAWBERRIES:
DOUBTLESS GOD COULD HAVE MADE A BETTER BERRY
    BUT DOUBTLESS GOD NEVER DID
    (SO IF I BE JUDGE)
GOD NEVER DID MAKE A MORE CALM, QUIET OR INNOCENT RECREATION
    THAN ANGLING"

To the best of my knowledge; there are no closed seasons for trout in any impoundments They only apply to potential breeding streams that flow into impoundments..

    Blair;
This old sage (read as seasoned) would like to agree but frankly I'd be more inclined to believe the association went in the other direction, eg. Piscator got his name from 'piscatorial'. The word 'piscatorial' has been in use since the 17th century as best I can establish. The Complete Angler' was written in 1653 which is the 17th century. This is the strangely missing post of which I had written. It has mysteriously reappeared.
Read in the other post more details of my most irrelevant researching.
