Thats a classic , I hope they had their sunnies on when that hit, home for a quick drink. Actually a carbon fishing rod would save u by attracting the lightning to it instead of its owner.
Never carry a graphite rod vertically if there is electricity in the air.
I's all pretty safe if kept horizontal.
But best to not be out there.
Not much you can do if the storm develops while you are out. We once left our rods 'lying' beside an old tree trunk at Eucumbene and took shelter in my half cab boat. Noel.
